HE CALLED ME SIR

You ever get the feeling that our generation has completely lost touch of some of the foundations that others had? I was walking in to a gas station today (trying to get Junior Mints for Rachel, she had a craving...) and I held the door for an older gentleman that had to be in the 60s-70s-80s range (he was having trouble walking if that gives a hint). When I did, he said "Thank you sir." My only thought was, isn't it supposed to be me saying this stuff? Aren't I the one who says sir? It seems so trivial but it was really shocking to me. I can think of tons of people in my age set who don't even address elders with any respect. It should say something when someone 40 years my superior is still addressing another human being as sir (or ma'am if necessary) out of respect for the person. If that doesn't speak volumes, I don't really know what does.
