HELD TO YOURS BUT DON'T HOLD ME TO MINE

For some reason I have been engaging in a lot of conversations that usually involve a "he said, she said" feel. Not that I'm dealing with arguing parties that often, but there is something about the discussions I find myself in that make it so that I have two opposing views. In doing so, I've found one thing to be strangely familiar through all of it. In each case, one side is presenting the views of another and it seems is holding the other side to the exactness of what they said. In being able to be what feels like a 3rd person omniscient, you can see how that is a little off the mark. You notice that in dealing with someone else's "position" you want to go with what they said, not what they may have intended. We hold people to what they have said and then go with that. We can become to oblivious to context, audience, purpose, etc. It's interesting to note how an accurate Biblical exegesis (reading) can also work well in nearly every other kind of reading / understanding we develop. I wonder what would happen if we took less of what may be documented on paper or audio archives and went more with an overall consesus. Would we get different results?
