TRAINED REGURGITATION

[THIS POST IS NOT ABOUT VOMITING] Yesterday, Rachel and I were talking about something that seems to be a reoccurring theme. For the past couple of months, we have been on a journey with our student ministry. We are trying to use alternative teaching methods instead of the traditional "listen to my sermon." We have tried to use a much more Socratic method instead of simply presenting information. This involves a series of questions that build upon each other and allow for the students / pupils to have an active style of learning instead of a passive one. It's pretty cool to watch it work.

I have noticed in our series of questions and answers, that within the Christian culture there is an overwhelming amount of the "right answers." It's that moment when people say what they have said every time they have been asked that question and you begin to wonder if anyone really believes it. As we were driving away from service, Rachel brought up this same point. She said that there was (for lack of a better word) "regurgitation" of things that had been heard. She then went on to say, "I could say what I needed to say whenever I needed to say it even if I didn't believe it. I guess that's the danger of growing up in a Christian home. You learn how to respond when you need to." It seems that this happens all over. The question I have been asking our students is this "Are you convinced that?" or "Do you believe that?" We walked through Psalm 103 a couple of weeks ago as an example and it brings it all to a head. I wonder if the things that we have become trained at regurgitating are actually things we are convinced of, or if we are simply saying it because we don't know what else to say. It will make you wonder...
