LEAVING EVERYTHING

I've been wrestling with a couple of thoughts from Scripture that seem to be eating away at every portion of how I live. As a call to be a disciple of Jesus, there is a lot of thoughts that can come to mind. On Sunday, we walked through all the passages where Jesus asks someone to follow Him. You find the call to follow Jesus is something GIGANTIC. You're not simply going on a stroll with a miracle worker. You are completely abandoning your life and living as He lives (emphasis on His living style). In the initial call to Peter, James and John, we find their response to be "they left everything and followed Him" (see Luke 5).

I find that I bring some baggage to the table. Regardless of how I may have come into Christianity, I developed thoughts about how "church" should be done. It was own personal perceptions. Not only that, but I brought dreams, ideas, thoughts, ways of life, character habits, routines and history. All of that contributes to my idea of how to live for Jesus. However, it's not quite following. Plenty of people walked with Jesus. The crowds clamored to get close. Not many followed. Yet in bringing things to the table, we aren't able to leave everything to follow Him. We still hold on to ourself and how we think we are going.

I wonder if in not leaving everything if we are getting all we're asking. I would say that most of our issues with Christianity, be it doubts or concerns are related to us not leaving everything. When we hold on to something, that something vies for attention from what we are trying to grab hold of. It influences, affects and has baggage.

I consider everything and the cost it takes to leave it. I think of my own call to leave it all. Though all of us claim to be disciples, many of us respond like the rich young ruler. Instead of leaving everything, Jesus calls for that specific something and we leave sorrowful because we could not let it go (see Luke 18:18-27). Though it may not be money or riches, we all are holding on to something. God is calling all of us to leave everything. Not a lot. Not simply to follow the rules. He calls us to leave everything and follow Him. The LORD is calling you to leave it all. How will you respond?
