KIDS AND CAFFEINE

As I was exciting Rendezvous from my Saturday morning sabbatical (the high school girls come over every other week and have breakfast), I noticed a very young man and his mother grabbing some coffee and it had me wondering. What kind of horrible effects is that going to have on that kid?

I'm all about the java. And I'm all about caffeine. My love for coffee and Mountain Dew speak of it. However, is it right to be giving young kids coffee? I can remember a while back in theBURN, there was a kid who was in sixth grade and was hooked on the juice. This had teenagers acting as teenagers do and they began to call him "coffee boy." If he didn't take it as such a term of endearment and pride, I would have stopped it but it struck a chord in his heart that made him leap for joy. At sixth grade it was an addiction. Within twelve years of life, he had made it to the point that without coffee, he could not survive. A lot of this reverberates within theBURN too. I have students come to me all the time asking where they can get some coffee or when we'll have the Mountain Dew back and each time they are speaking of this fix they need to get. Are we doing harm to these kids? Are we creating a VERY unhealthy lifestyle by which most of them will be unable to recover?

I can remember for a long time my mom and dad making it a point that I could only have so much soda in one day. It's sooo easy to let it get carried away and my parents made sure I wasn't a crackhead. I wonder if we (my age bracket) are doing the same thing. Are we feeding children McDonalds because we think it's cute, giving them limitless amounts of snacks because we couldn't have them and letting them have whatever they want because "it's all good?" We could be in for a rude surprise real soon. One that looks like over 34% of Americans being obese (which is true already).
