MOVIE REVIEW : MAX PAYNE

I don't know why I continue to expect the world of Mark Walhberg. It seems like every time he stars in a movie, I expect for it to be something big. Inevitably I am let down. With Max Payne I was expecting a lot. In my video game days, Max Payne was a favorite. Before the Matrix was huge, the bullet time of Max Payne was amazing! To be able to slow down time and jump through any room and spin like a crazy man with two guns turned out to be quite fun. When I found out that Mark Walhberg would be playing Max Payne, I thought it would be something he would be able to pull off. For a character that was full of depth and lacked any emotion, it seemed like Mark Walhberg was fit for the role. I caught a trailer and thought all might not be lost.

Max Payne is a crescendo with no endo. For most of the film, you are left wanting. In a game that is built on bullet time and non-stop action, you are left with a movie that has an unending back story that leads to an all to short ending for fans of the game. Rated at PG-13, Max Payne isn't quite what the trailer makes it out to be, like most movies these days. Having reviewed it at kids-in-mind.com, I knew that the movie would leave me thinking of how much better it could have been. My thoughts exactly. You cannot ask Mark Walhberg to carry a movie for you. It just doesn't happen. Marky Mark does not make for a must watch. As an accessory to a movie, no doubt. As a guest apperance, sure. But to carry the movie, that's asking a lot. You through Ludacris in there and you have a wasted effort to a cult classic. For action junkies, Max Payne will lead you to believe it's going to be really good. And then you'll watch it. For drama fans, you'll hear heart beats and intense music throughout the movie and never really feel the drama or have any conclusion. To watch the end and know that a second one is coming makes me hope the second time around is better than the first. Best of luck Wahlberg, my rope is getting short.

Max Payne : C+
