A couple of nights ago I had a dream. One that forced me to ask some questions of myself, the way I lead and how we as leaders interact with volunteers. The dream was this:
At a national "church" conference, one of my youth leaders was asked to be a keynote speaker during one of the main sessions. In the dream I can remember sitting in the stands and being upset because I hadn't been asked to speak. I WAS THE ONE WHO EMPOWERED HIM TO DO WHAT HE WAS DOING!
As I woke from the dream, I found myself singing the song above, thanking God I wasn't that way and asking the following question: Why do we empower volunteers?
At this point in the blog, you can start to rattle of really easy answer. Those are what we call "blah, blah, blah" moments. For many of us, we need to ask the question. If you are empowering volunteers to fulfill your vision and ministry, you are empowering for the wrong reasons. If you are the one who "wins" for empowered volunteers, you are empowering for the wrong reasons.
Here are a couple of reasons to empower volunteers:
- You are empowering them to fulfill God's calling on their life.
- They are empowered to do the same for others.
- The joy of seeing someone able to "do what they are here to do."
- Allowing others to hear from God and have vision for what God wants to do besides yourself.
- Getting past "the one man" show.
I don't know about you, but I look forward to the day when I will be able to sit in a stadium with 10,000 other people and cheer on someone who has caught a vision for what God wants to do and has taken it to a national stage. To be able to do so would be the highest honor a leader could receive.
